June 10, 2017, Foxhunt Recap

The WGARS June Foxhunt was the most successful to date, with roughly 25% of members coming out for the festivities. The group once again met at Courthouse Café in downtown Carrollton to enjoy breakfast before the pre-hunt briefing. It was here that the frequency on which the fox was transmitting was given, as well as the boundary of the Carrollton Greenbelt.

As soon as the hunt began, it was a race to the top of the nearby parking deck in order to get the first reading on where the fox may be hiding. Some groups were able to pick up a very faint signal, but others were unable to hear it. The teams then went their separate ways to try to narrow down the location, with everyone ending up at a park on the lake at Southwire. The fox was located off of a path in a wooded area of the park.

Field Day 2017 Preparation Underway

Field Day is a national (US) amateur radio exercise where amateur radio operators work to make as many contact over 24-27 hours on the last full weekend of June and will take place June 24th-25th in 2017. The West Georgia Amateur Radio Society will hold its activities at Little Tallapoosa Park, utilizing the Carroll County EMA mobile command center vehicle. 

Amateur radio operators and the general public are invited to participate.  Non-amateur radio operators will have the opportunity to attempt an amateur radio contact.

WGARS operations will take place at the Equestrian Campground at Little Tallapoosa Park, just look for the gravel road to your left almost immediately after entering the park.  If you need directions, click here. Coordinates of the entrance are 33.6452835, -85.0513928.

March 2017 Foxhunt - A Great Saturday

The March 2017 Foxhunt was a great success, with a great turnout and wonderful weather for the hunters.  The group met at the Courthouse Cafe in Carrollton for breakfast before stepping out into the parking lot for a pre-hunt briefing and then taking to the streets.

The only information provided was the frequency the fox was tuned to and that the fox was hidden somewhere within or very close to the perimeter of the Greenbelt loop around the city. 

All participants immediately made way to the top of the nearby parking garage to get an initial bearing on the signal.  However, unlike previous hunts, the signal could not be received there, leaving the hunters to begin a search around the loop. 

SKYWARN Training 2017 - Join the SKYWARN Team!

WGARS members turned out in force for the 2017 SKYWARN training program put together by the Carroll County Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service. Not only did members have the chance to take the SKYWARN training, but county EMA Director Tim Padgett arranged, and participated in, a tour of the 911 center and new EOC facility. Those who didn't attend missed an educational and interesting evening.

SKYWARN is the National Weather Service's (NWS) citizen spotter training program, open to broad participation. 

The 2nd Fox Hunt of 2016 a Success!

With the success of the October Fox Hunt and the excitement of doing it again fresh in our minds, John Playford (WD8LQT) organized a 2nd effort. This hunt was much more ambitious; rather than a foot-hunt within the boundaries of a local park, the fox would be hidden somewhere within the borders of the Carrollton Greenbelt trail, an area of about 20 square miles!

For those who aren't sure what a "Fox Hunt" is, it is basically a game of hide-and-seek with a hidden transmitter.  Someone hides it and it's the job of the hunters to locate it as quickly as possible.  A new twist in this hunt was we were also completing for the shortest distance traveled as well.

Fox Hunt / SET 2016 was a great success

Roughly fourteen amateur radio operators converged on the park near Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton for a combination Simulated Emergency Test and Fox Hunt. John Playford (WD8LQT) developed the scenario under which the event would take place:

An small airplane crashes with only the pilot and a blind passenger. The pilot is injured and is unable to speak, but writes down the frequency he is transmitting on. The blind passenger (our own Lee Studdard, KI4QLV) believes he can make his way down a trail with the note to find help. Lee, being a ham radio operator, took his radio with him and began radioing calls for help on amateur radio frequencies. He finally makes contact but can not tell people where he is or the frequency the injured pilot is transmitting on. To assist rescuers in locating him he transmits for brief periods of time on a regular interval so rescuers (other amateur radio operators) can home in on his radio signal, locate him, and then get the frequency the pilot is transmitting on so the pilot may be rescued.

Lee was stashed away for participants to locate with an HT, simulating the scenario's circumstances. Participants first began homing on Lee's transmissions, complicated by the strength of the signal and reflections off the nearby pond. Once locating Lee, the operator(s) would take one of the pieces of paper that had the frequency of a 2nd hidden transmitter and would begin hunting for it. Since different people were looking for different transmitters at any given moment, things were pretty interesting!

By the time the event wrapped up, around two hours later, all operators had found both Lee and the hidden transmitter.

So much fun was had that it was decided another Fox Hunt should be held in the near future, and planning is under way!

2024 ARRL Summer Field Day

Summer Field Day is right around the corner – June 22 and 23.  We hope you will come

and join us for activities, food, and operating.

·          

·         The plan is to have the trailer set up with 4 workstations and the mini-split (that means air conditioning people!).

·         The callsign we will be using is a 1x1 - W4F

·         The location is Little Tallapoosa Park Equestrian Camping area off Hwy 113, Carrollton, GA

·         If we receive permission, the plan is to set up the trailer at the campsite on Friday afternoon/evening, get antennas up, and laptops networked.  Notifications will go out via email and the nets as we will need all the assistance we can get.

·         Arrival time on Saturday morning will be based on the happenings of Friday evening.

·         The actual field day schedule is currently:

·         Saturday 12:00 noon - Hot dog lunch.  Sign up sheet to be posted and link will be sent.  Items needed include anything that goes with a hot dog lunch.  Buns, chips, cheese, chili, assorted drinks, and of course dessert.

·         Saturday 1:00 p.m. there will be a walking Fox Hunt in the park.  I plan for this to be no joke, so bring your best game!

·         Saturday 2:00 p.m. - Field Day contacts begin.

·         Saturday 3:00 p.m. - WX4BK will be giving a demonstration on the use of Winlink over HF.  While we had a workshop this past spring on winlink, there were many who still wonder about its uses and just basically how it works.  

·         Saturday evening - Chip in for wings/pizza/etc....

·         Sunday morning - 8:00 a.m. - Cheese Eggs and Bacon (maybe some coffee?)

·         Sunday takedown - weather permitting begin tear-down at 1 p.m..  All operating ceases at 2:00 p.m..

·         Remember - unlicensed people can operate under the guidance of a control operator.  There will also be a GOTA (Get on the Air) station manned by a coach for anyone interested in the hobby, newly licensed hams, or inactive hams.
