Maxie Brown Strickland, of Bowdon, Georgia, passed away on November 28, 2017. He was 79.
Mr. Strickland was born on November 11, 1938 in Bremen, Georgia to the late Virgil and Agnes Strickland. He was a clothing designer for Bremen-Bowdon Investment for 52 years and was a member of Bowdon Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Strickland was an avid outdoorsman with a particular affinity for turkey hunting. His passion for wild turkeys and their conservation extended beyond the woods through his involvement in the National Wild Turkey Federation. He helped organize many local chapter fundraisers through the Little Tallapoosa River Chapter which, at one time, was one of the most prosperous chapters in the state of Georgia, and was instrumental in starting an annual JAKES Field Day for local youth that was awarded national recognition by the NWTF because of its success. Always selfless with his time in promoting the outdoors, Maxie was for many years a Hunter’s Safety Instructor with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Archie Strickland.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Laura Whitley Strickland; his sons, Terry Strickland and Chris Strickland; his grandsons, Jamie Strickland, Ben Strickland, and Brent Strickland; his granddaughter, Holly Hammond; his great-granddaughter, Lily Strickland; and his siblings, Agnes Morris, Evelyn Stanford, and Earl Strickland.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Bowdon Baptist Church. Rev. Justin Richards will officiate. Mr. Strickland’s sons, Terry and Chris, will offer eulogies. Music will be provided by Rev. Benny Boggus and Mrs. Mary Frances Wilson. Pallbearers will be Jamie Strickland, Ben Strickland, Brent Strickland, Gary Whitley, Tony Strickland, and Kelley Hammond. Interment will follow in Bowdon City Cemetery. Prior to the services, Mr. Strickland’s body will lie-in-state at the church from 10:00 a.m. till the funeral hour.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, November 30, 2017 from 4:00 till 7:00 p.m.
